Vitamin D Supplements

Vitamin D is largely synthesized by the body through exposure to sunlight. The two most important forms of vitamin D areegocalciferol (vitamin D2), found in foods, and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), synthesized by the skin from exposure to sunlight.

Foods with vitamin D include cod liver oil, sea fish, salmon, eggs, mushrooms and other vegetables. What is vitamin D good for? It participates in calcium metabolism, phosphorus homeostasis, and plays a key role in the formation, growth, and maintenance of the skeleton and bone mass.

Vitamin D supplementation is particularly indicated during pregnancy and lactation and during periods of growth, periods when daily requirements for this nutrient increase. Vitamin D deficiency can adversely affect bone and dental health in adults and children.
