Cortisol Control

Cortisol is a hormone produced by our body at times of increased tension, which is why it is also called stress hormone. Cortisol production is regulated by the pituitary gland and hypothalamus and is secreted by the adrenal glands. Its functions are very important: it regulates blood sugar, controls lipid, protein and carbohydrate metabolism, and regulates the immune system.

When one or more stressful events occur, either physically or mentally, the body increases cortisol production (along with those of norepinephrine and adrenaline) to react better and more readily. Muscle tension, accelerated heart rate and quickened breathing are the most obvious consequences of its release.

Under normal conditions, cortisol concentration follows the circadian rhythm, with higher doses upon awakening decreasing over the course of the day. Although it is a natural response of the body to stress, the presence of elevated cortisol levels for prolonged periods of time can have adverse, even serious, effects on health.
